Florence Nightingale: The lady with the lamp KS1 Powerpoint lesson(s)
A KS1 power-point of 40 slides about the life of Florence Nightingale and her impact on nursing, hospitals and hygiene today. The slides are supported ith key questions for pupils based upon simple data and information gathering and prior knowledge about hospitals, germs and infection control.
There is a link to a Youtube clip about the life of Florence Nightingale and a range of cross curricular activities to develop knowledge of the Crimea War and the impact of Florence’s work. The final slides focus on the features of a leaflet and include a template of a leaflet scaffolded for the pupils to write about ‘Hand washing’ and share with their families.
This power-point can be used as a discrete lesson or to dip into to support teaching about the different aspects of Florence Nightingale’s life and work. The slides are structured to maximise paired and small group talk and activities.
Ks1/2 Mothering Sunday Powerpoint Lesson.
Mother’s Day: KS1&2 powerpoint lesson of 26 slides focusing on the traditions and origin of Mothering Sunday. The initial slides look at the different forms of a family and how each is special. There are activities and key questions to encourage pupils to reflect upon why mothers are special, their role in the family and how they can be ‘honoured’ according to the Christian commandment – ‘honour thy mother’.
Includes information on how Mothering Sunday gets its name and interesting facts about how it is celebrated. There are two links to YouTube for ideas and instruction on how to make a simple flower and a flower bouquet card for Mother’s Day.
Grace Darling KS1 Powerpoint lesson(s)
A KS1 power-point of 31 slides about the life of Grace Darling and her bravery in the rescue of the Forfarshire. The slides are supported with key questions for pupils focusing on geographical vocabulary and location of Bamburgh and the Farne Islands, historical date ordering and timelines and ordering the cross section of a lighthouse home.
There is a link to a clip and poetry about the life of Grace Darling and a range of cross curricular activities to develop knowledge of the rescue. The final slides focus on a simple storyboard scaffold and word vocabulary mat to aid pupils to write an account of the rescue.

Learning Objectives:
To use the correct historical vocabulary when talking about the features of a castle.
To compare the similarities and differences between motte and bailey and stone built castles.
To identify William the Conqueror , where he came from and his link to castles.
To use my knowledge about castles to make my own information book.
The slides are easy to follow and devised to encourage partner/trio discussion and collaboration through key questioning and small group activities. Slides 2-4 use pupil knowledge as a starting point assessment through a reflection activity. Slides 5-11 focus on William the Conqueror and include a paired map activity using atlases. Slides 12-20 look at early motte and bailey castles and include a short clip from Youtube. Included is a simple DT planning sheet for pupils to design then build a motte and bailey castle. Slides 21-23 encourage pupils to consider the purposes of castles in war and peace time. Slides 24-32 can be used as a castle features class quiz or a paired assessment. Slides 33- 36 look at famous castles belonging to Normans. The final slide offers a suggestion for making a ‘castle’ booklet or scrap book.
Y5/6 Secret Agent handbook
Handbook of codes for pupils to crack either individually or with a partner. Each page has messages for pupils to decode from one of six codes including Reverse Alphabet, Letter/Number substitution, Secret Symbol Code, Morse, Cipher Wheel and Pigpen Cipher. There is a practise page for pupils to devise their own secret messages and a template and instructions for making a Cipher Wheel. There is a page where pupils can use three methods to create their own secret agent code name.
The Reverse Alphabet, Letter/Number and Secret Symbol codes are suitable for LA/MA pupils whilst the others are more challenging. Great fun as part of a lesson (English Grammar, comprehension etc) or as a filler activity for a specific group.

KS1 & 2 Ancient Romans. Set of 5 worksheets. Label the armour on the Roman soldier, Label the clothes on the Roman man, Label the armour on the gladiator (3 worksheets). 2 Ancient Roman alphabet (Latin) worksheets .
Total set of 5 worksheets: Three separate worksheets to enable pupils to match the clothing vocabulary to the correct part of the picture (soldier, gladiator and man in toga).
There are ten items of clothing to label on the gladiator and soldier worksheets and six parts to label on the Roman man. The vocabulary list is included on each worksheet for pupil use and there is an image of a soldier, gladiator and Roman man for pupils to colour.
There are 2 simple worksheets for pupils to use to translate common words into the 21 letters of the Latin alphabet. A simple translation grid is included.
Useful activities to assess pupil knowledge of key vocabulary at the end of a mini topic on Ancient Rome, The Roman Empire, Clothes through the ages, Ancient writing.

Each plan includes a planning stimulus starting point (dilemma, point of interest, mystery) and key questions to generate ideas and description.
Can be used as part of cross curricular topics : The beach, Seaside, Sea, Adventures or as part of English narrative writing.
I used this with Year 2 and 3 pupils but could also be useful with LA Y4/5/6.
KS1 & 2 RE : A Christening Mystery powerpoint lesson (s)
KS1 & 2 RE : A Christening Mystery. A powerpoint lesson beginning with twelve clues of images, a sound bite and questions which build up into a Christening celebration. Pupils work in small groups of three and four and are guided through the problem solving slides via key questions and discussion/written tasks to try to help Lewis solve which celebration has taken place using the clues from the mystery box found in his attic. Pupils are encouraged to learn key vocabulary (font, Holy water, pew, aisle etc) and discuss the celebration possibilities giving reasons for their thoughts as the clues emerge.
Slides 20-23 offer simple factual information about Christenings and include a painting of ‘The Baptism of Christ’ (Da Vinci) and images of stained glass windows. The final slide offers a simple photocopiable activity for pupils to complete on what three wishes they would give to a baby and an opportunity to write about/find out about how they were named – a class or homework follow up task.

To use latitude and longitude co-ordinates to work out where Santa should deliver his presents.
Complete lesson which includes the letter/number substitution code, slides to print for pupils to record information and complete the tasks. Pupils will need access to the internet, maps and globes to complete the latitude and longitude activity.
KS2 Y6 cross curricular powerpoint lesson (36 slides) Secret Agent Academy.
KS2 Y6 powerpoint lesson of 39 slides. Secret Agent Academy is a lesson (s) set in a ‘real’ context where pupils are ‘trained’ for a special mission to catch a villain. They create Agent Code Names and numbers, work as part of an Agent Cell, take an oath of secrecy and create common experiences eg a secret handshake. Their mission consists of 4 tasks which include cracking Substitution and Caesar codes linked to Maths problem solving challenges (equivalent numbers, comparing fractions with different denominators, sequences, missing numbers and ordering, patterns and calculations).
Slides 2-9 include an introduction to cracking codes and a go at deciphering a real code sent by Mary Queen of Scots before y pupils enter the Secret Agent Academy (slide 10 onwards). The Maths challenge resources are included on the slides at the end of the PP as well as information for further teaching resource websites on Codes and Ciphers.
Learning Objectives

KS2 Powerpoint lesson(s) Highwayman /Dick Turpin
KS2 powerpoint of 27 slides which can be used as a complete lesson or divided into a series of lessons. The slides include group and paired questions to explore and define the life of a highwayman, their target victims and the reasons for particular types of robbery. There is a focus on the life of Dick Turpin who has written a Facebook page and a historical account of his crimes leading to his arrest. Includes an opportunity to learn the game ‘Hangman’ and look at historical documents eg Christening record, Trial poster . Final task is the design of a ‘Wanted ’poster for the King.
KS2 powerpoint lesson Charles Rennie Mackintosh
KS2 powerpoint lesson on the artist and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Series of 24 slides telling the story of his life and works. The slides are interactive and promote discussion within pairs and small groups. Pupils will learn the features of art nouveau/deco architecture and furniture design, identification of geometric shapes in designs, and use of images to create their own geometric pattern/design. Pupils will use the Mackintosh rose as a stimulus to create their own floral design and identify the features of Mackintosh’s watercolours through comparison of his most famous works. There is a link to a Youtube clip explaining how to paint with watercolours and the final activity is a research task to find out the auction price of some of Mackintosh’s works.
Can be used as a whole lesson or series of lessons which lead into practical cross curricular activities.

Grace Darling KS1 Powerpoint lesson on the life of Grace Darling and her bravery. The slides are interactive and include key questions and opportunities for pupils to discuss the story, order her family tree and appreciate how Grace lived in the lighthouse with her family. Included in the bundle are a blank project book template for pupils to record their facts and ideas about the topic and a blank Who am I? template which can act as a mini assessment activity at the end of the topic.
KS1 (Y1,2,3) London sights series of 5 powerpoint lessons.
KS1 Years 1, 2 and 3 - A series of 5 consecutive power-point lessons about the sights of London (66 slides). Lesson 1 introduces London using the Union Flag as a starting point with learning focusing on the countries of Britain and the location of London. The pupils are encouraged to use a Project Book to record their journey through each lesson. Lesson 2 introduces some simple facts about London and focuses on Buckingham Palace. Pupils will create a simple comparative table which enables them to compare the Palace with their own homes, pose questions and draw conclusions. The lesson can be developed into Art/DT to design a flag. Lesson 3 focuses on the Changing of the Guard with a link to a short YouTube clip followed by a physical group activity. Lesson 4 recognition of London landmarks and a Maths measurement activity with trundle wheels linked to Big Ben. There is also a short activity to develop understanding of Roman Numerals. Lesson 5 London Transport and a Maths activity to devise the quickest routes on the Tube. This lesson includes an end of unit assessment to assess pupil knowledge through a task set by the Prime Minister.
Each lesson offers clear steps for pupils to work in partners, small groups and individually. Each slide can be printed separately to enable pupils to have access to information tables and data. At the beginning of each lesson there is a short recap activity to assess learning from the previous lesson.

Easter
Series of 6 Y2 and KS2 powerpoint lessons on the topic of Easter. Each lesson includes the timings for each activity at the top of each slide. There are opportunities for pupils to work collaboratively in every lesson and record and share their ideas and knowledge.
Lesson 1: (30 mins) focuses on celebrations and Easter as a celebration and begins with an initial assessment based on pupil starting points. Pupils work in small groups of 2 or 3 and create a Spider diagram and Mind Map to record their knowledge. There is an opportunity for group feedback at the end of the lesson.
Lesson 2: (30 mins) focuses on the Easter story told through a link to a story on YouTube. The pupils raise questions about the story and have a P4C debate. There are Teacher notes on slides 10,11 and 12 to help shape the debate session.
Lesson 3: (30mins) focuses on Holy Week through images and key questions on each slide. There is a short YouTube clip on how to make a Palm cross.
Lesson 4: (40 mins) focuses on Maundy Thursday and the Last Supper. There is a 20 min research activity based on the painting ‘The last Supper’. Pupils will need access to books about this subject and the internet. There are opportunities for pupils to explore responses and feelings to different aspects of the story leading onto the Resurrection. A template on slide 27 can be printed for pupil recording.
Lesson 5: (60 mins) focuses on the Christian symbol of the cross with a 45min Hot Cross Buns baking activity which can be either as a Teacher demonstration or as a group task.
Lesson 6: (40 mins) focuses on how Easter is celebrated today and explores some of the traditions such as Easter Bunny, lambs, chocolate eggs, daffodils etc. There are key questions for pupils to discuss in small groups and an end of unit assessment using all the information they have learnt in lessons 1-6 in the design of an Easter poster.
The final slide offers an additional Easter creative activity for pupils to follow instructions to make an Easter sheep for a card or a display. ( I used activity with the class when a group was completing research (Lesson 4) and a group were making Hot cross Buns (from Lesson5) with a Teaching Assistant).
KS1&2 Easter story sequencing activity.
Learning objective: To sequence and retell the Easter story in order.
Pupils cut out the images and descriptions and sequence the story onto a storyboard template. There are three templates attached which support differentiation and reading levels. HA template is numbered only and pupils order the story into the numbered boxes. MA is differentiated using key words from the main text in the numbered boxes. LA order the story into the numbered boxes with the support of key sentences which they can match to the main text.

Learning Objectives:
To read and follow the instructions accurately and in the correct sequence/order.
To recognise the features of instructions (What materials are needed, method, using an imperative (bossy) verb, sequencing actions and numbering each stage in order, using diagrams and pictures).
Five DT activities for pupils to read, understand and make. The activities include : Paste egg bunny, Easter basket, spring daffodil, Easter nests, pompom chick.
Use as an introduction to work on instructions to encourage pupils to observe the features in a fun way or as a format to help pupils scaffold their own instructional writing.
KS2 Reindeer Geography/Science focused Powerpoint lesson
KS2 Reindeer Powerpoint lesson. 23 slides which include geography and science focused, paired activities. Pupils will need access to maps and globes to identify the Arctic Circle and regions. Activities also include written tasks (completing sentences, writing definition in own words, watching a short information clip on Youtube and a follow up quiz with written answers). There is a linked maths measuring task and a data interpretation table with linked questions. Also includes photographs of real (not cartoon!) reindeer. Santa’s reindeer is only mentioned in relation to their antlers (promise!)

EY/KS1 Signs of Autumn Powerpoint of 41slides.
Learning Objectives:
To know the names of the Autumn months.
To recognise the signs of Autumn around me.
To explain why some small animals hibernate.
To know the features of harvest and recognise harvest grain, fruit and vegetables.
The slides include photographs of animals which hibernate (dormouse, bat, frog, grass snake etc) and do not hibernate (squirrels, badgers, rabbits/hares). At specific points there are short paired talk activities and simple class activities eg Name the harvest fruits, name the harvest vegetables, a grain chart activity, summer clothes and autumn clothes.
